Member of Parliament, Samuel Atta Mills
Member of Parliament for the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem (KEEA) Constituency, Samuel Atta Mills, has backed President John Mahama’s decision to scrap fuel benefits for political appointees, describing it as a step in the right direction.
Speaking to journalists, Atta Mills said the move sets a positive tone for fiscal discipline.
“I think it is a great idea. We have so many government vehicles, and I think it is setting a good example. They should buy their own fuel. I think that will be good for the nation.”
When asked whether the initiative could hinder the work of ministers, the MP strongly disagreed.
“Why will it affect their operations? Members of Parliament, don’t we go round? Some of the ministers are also Members of Parliament, and they go round just like we do.”
Atta Mills went on to highlight that MPs already cover their own fuel costs, suggesting ministers should be able to do the same.
“We, the Members of Parliament, we buy our own fuel. Nobody gives any MP fuel allowance. So if you’re a minister and you’re buying your own fuel, you’re just sacrificing a little bit for the nation.”
His comments follow an announcement earlier today, July 15, by President John Mahama, who cancelled the payment of fuel for all political appointees as part of wider efforts to cut government spending.
