A tragic collapse at an illegal mining site in the Asante Akyem Central Municipality has claimed the lives of two miners and left a woman in critical condition.
The incident occurred at Santranso near Odumasi, where three individuals were reportedly working inside a newly dug galamsey pit when the walls suddenly caved in, trapping them beneath heaps of soil.
Residents and fellow miners rushed to the scene and managed to retrieve all three victims after an emergency rescue effort. However, two of them were pronounced dead, while the injured woman was transported to a medical facility for treatment.
The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Konongo-Odumasi Government Hospital mortuary as investigations continue.
Assembly Member for the Bomereso Electoral Area, Isaac Kyei Andoh, confirmed the incident and expressed concern about the dangers posed by illegal mining operations in the area.
Authorities have launched investigations into the collapse, while efforts to curb illegal mining activities are expected to be intensified following the latest loss of life.
