The government has reiterated its determination to intensify the fight against illegal mining, locally known as galamsey, amid renewed public pressure for decisive action.
Some religious and civil society groups have recently called for the declaration of a state of emergency to confront the menace. President John Dramani Mahama has indicated that such a measure would only be considered if other interventions fail.
Speaking on Channel One TV on Wednesday, September 17, Minister of Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa described the situation as urgent and said the administration remains committed to addressing it.
“We’re on a suicidal path if we don’t stop this. We must take this up and win this war,” he said, warning of the consequences if illegal mining is not contained.
He added that the government considers the fight against galamsey a national priority and noted that securing victory would be the best way to honour the memory of the eight state officials who lost their lives in a helicopter crash on August 6.
