The Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association has announced its decision to break away from the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), citing what it calls repeated exclusion from important decision-making processes.
Speaking at a press briefing on Sunday, December 14, the association’s Head of Communications, Takyie Addo, outlined several concerns that have recently arisen.
Mr Addo specifically criticised GUTA for inaugurating a new president without informing or consulting the Abossey Okai association, despite it being one of the country’s largest and most influential business groups. He noted that such actions are taken without the knowledge or participation of the association, a situation he says compromises the interests of its members.
According to him, the issue goes beyond a simple oversight, describing it as a pattern of disregard by GUTA and a failure to acknowledge the association’s importance within the wider business community. He further expressed concern that key decisions are being made without the involvement of Abossey Okai’s leadership, pointing to a serious lack of consultation with a major stakeholder.
In light of these unresolved issues, Mr Addo stated that the Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association would withdraw from all GUTA activities and decision-making processes. He added that the association would not re-engage unless GUTA leadership formally recognises its role and ensures its inclusion in matters that affect its operations.
Mr Addo warned that the move could weaken GUTA’s capacity to develop inclusive and effective policies, stressing that relations between the two bodies would remain strained until mutual respect and proper consultation are restored.
