Following Asante Kotoko’s hard-earned away victory over Dreams FC on Matchday 14 of the Ghana Premier League, head coach Karim Zito has pushed back strongly against what he considers unjust criticism from sections of the media.
The win came at a critical time for the Porcupine Warriors, who had gone four matches without a victory prior to the encounter. That poor run had sparked growing dissatisfaction among supporters, with some fans openly calling for Zito to be relieved of his duties. The result against Dreams FC, however, has helped calm tensions around the club, at least for now.
Addressing journalists after the game, Zito expressed frustration over how his situation is being handled compared to coaches at the highest level of European football, particularly regarding injury concerns.
“Some journalists are unfairly putting pressure on me. When Pep Guardiola says Rodri is injured, nobody complains. But when I say we have 13 injured players, it suddenly becomes a problem,” Zito stated.
He also defended Kotoko’s position in the league, urging critics to adopt a longer-term view of the season and to consider the challenges his team is dealing with.
“The league is a marathon. If you’re lambasting me because we were sitting fifth, then you’re not being fair, especially when you know the problems I’m facing,” he added.
Despite the scrutiny surrounding his role, the Kotoko coach made it clear that he is not shaken by the pressure.
“If I leave Kotoko today, nothing will happen to me,” he remarked, reinforcing his belief that the criticism directed at him is excessive.
The victory over Dreams FC has provided Kotoko with a timely boost as they look to regain momentum and improve their standing on the league table in the coming weeks.
