Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw is reportedly facing suspension after instructing his players to walk off the pitch in protest during the Africa Cup of Nations final. The incident occurred following a controversial late penalty awarded to Morocco, prompting strong reactions from the Senegalese bench. Although Senegal eventually returned to the field and went on to win the match in extra time, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has launched an investigation, raising the possibility of further sanctions beyond Thiaw’s expected punishment.
On Sunday night, Senegal claimed their second AFCON trophy in five years after a dramatic and highly disputed victory against host nation Morocco. The final was thrown into disarray when referee Jean Jacques Ndala awarded Morocco a late penalty, a decision that sparked outrage among Senegal’s players and officials.
Even though Morocco’s penalty taker Brahim Diaz saw his effort saved by goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, Senegal’s players left the pitch in protest and initially refused to continue into extra time. After tense discussions, the Teranga Lions eventually resumed play. Villarreal midfielder Pape Gueye then scored the decisive goal just four minutes into extra time, securing the championship.
Despite their triumph, Senegal’s actions during the final may carry serious consequences. Coach Thiaw has since apologised publicly for ordering his players off the field, admitting his decision was driven by emotion. Speaking to beIN Sports, he said he later realised his mistake, accepted the referee’s decision, and expressed regret for the team’s conduct.
CAF subsequently released a statement condemning Senegal’s behaviour and confirmed that a formal investigation had been opened, with appropriate disciplinary measures to be taken against those found responsible.
Journalist Romain Molina reports that Thiaw is likely to be the first member of the Senegal delegation to face punishment, with the CAF Disciplinary Commission expected to impose a suspension. The duration of the ban has not yet been announced. Molina also cautioned that the repercussions may extend beyond the head coach, warning that several Senegal players could also face sanctions as the disciplinary process continues.
