Communities in the Bekwai Municipality of the Ashanti Region are counting the cost of a violent rainstorm that struck on Sunday, February 8, 2026, leaving widespread destruction in its wake.
The storm, accompanied by fierce winds, tore through Denyaseman Catholic Senior High School (SHS) in Poano, ripping off roofing sheets from a classroom block and causing part of the structure to collapse. The compound was left strewn with debris, broken concrete, scattered desks, chairs, books, and roofing materials , forcing students and teachers to abandon lessons.
“The winds were very strong, and we could see the roof shaking before it finally came off,” an eyewitness recalled. Another resident added, “The children cannot continue lessons there because it is too dangerous.”
The damage was not confined to the school. Several homes across the municipality also suffered extensive harm, with rooftops blown away and properties destroyed. Families have been left vulnerable, with many now seeking urgent assistance to clear debris, secure temporary shelter, and restore basic facilities.
Residents described the aftermath as heartbreaking, voicing fears about the safety of remaining structures and appealing for swift intervention. The storm has disrupted academic activities and daily life, underscoring the fragility of infrastructure in the face of extreme weather events.
