The Coalition of Unpaid Nurses and Midwives Ghana has accused the government of removing validated salary arrears from members’ payment vouchers without settling the outstanding amounts. The group described the situation as “deeply troubling” and called for urgent accountability.
In a statement issued on Thursday, February 26, the Coalition explained that although several affected members consistently saw their arrears validated each month within the government payroll system, the payments were never actually made.
“However, during the most recent validation for February 2026, these accumulated arrears suddenly vanished entirely from our Payment Vouchers,” the statement noted.
The Coalition further claimed that after the issue was made public, the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department quickly refuted the allegations.
“This denial is shocking and unacceptable,” the group said.
According to the Coalition, Payroll Validators and Human Resource Officers at various health facilities have independently confirmed that the arrears were removed from the payment vouchers of the affected nurses and midwives without any payments being processed.
The group questioned who authorised the deletion of their legitimately earned arrears and on what legal or administrative grounds the action was taken.
Describing the development as unfair and deceptive, the Coalition said the incident heightens existing concerns about transparency in salary administration.
“Nurses and midwives who have served this country diligently cannot and will not tolerate a situation where their hard-earned income is quietly erased from official records,” the statement added.
The Coalition urged the government to promptly investigate the matter, reinstate the unlawfully removed arrears, and ensure immediate payment, warning that it may take further action if the issue remains unresolved.
