Traders operating at the Kasoa Old Market have protested plans by the Awutu Senya East Municipal Assembly to pull down some temporary structures to pave the way for newly constructed permanent shops.
The Kasoa Petty Traders Association, which represents close to 1,000 members, warned that the move could significantly impact many traders who may struggle to afford rent for the proposed stores.
Addressing a press conference on March 4, the association’s secretary, Appiah Roger, argued that the assembly’s intended action contradicts the government’s 24-Hour Economy Policy.
The traders are demanding an immediate suspension of the demolition exercise and are urging authorities to engage them in thorough consultations before proceeding.
“We are demonstrating because most of the people trading here in Kasoa cannot afford the rent being charged for the new stores,” he stated.
