A viral video making serious allegations against police personnel in the Eastern Region has prompted a swift response from the highest level of Ghana’s Police Service.
Inspector-General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno has directed an immediate investigation into claims circulating on social media that some officers stationed at Kibi were involved in the unauthorised withdrawal of GH¢400,000 from the mobile money account of an unsuspecting agent.
The IGP has tasked the Police Professional Standards Bureau, the internal watchdog body responsible for maintaining discipline and professional conduct within the Service, to conduct a thorough and independent probe into the allegations.
In a statement, the Police Service confirmed that the alleged victim has already been identified and contacted, and is currently cooperating with investigators as the process of establishing the facts gets underway.
The Service moved to reassure the public that has been following the story closely since the video began spreading online, pledging that the investigation will be handled with professionalism and transparency, and that its findings will be made public once the process is complete.
The allegations, if substantiated, would represent a serious breach of public trust at a time when the Ghana Police Service has been working to strengthen its relationship with communities across the country. The involvement of the PPSB signals that the leadership of the Service is treating the matter with the gravity it demands.
For now, the country watches and waits, and the mobile money agent at the centre of it all continues to cooperate, hoping the system delivers the accountability it has promised.
