The Government of Ghana has strongly condemned an attack in southern Lebanon that left two Ghanaian peacekeepers seriously injured while serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
According to the Ghana Armed Forces, the headquarters of the Ghanaian battalion deployed in the mission area was struck by two missiles on March 6 during heightened fighting along the Lebanon-Israel border. Two soldiers sustained critical injuries while another officer suffered trauma. The attack also destroyed the officers’ mess facility at the base.
The injured personnel were initially treated at a medical bunker within the camp and are expected to be transferred to a UN referral hospital for further care. Military authorities say the rest of the Ghanaian contingent is safe and has taken shelter in underground bunkers due to the volatile security situation.
Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has lodged a formal protest with the United Nations, calling for a full investigation into the incident and urging all parties involved in the conflict to respect international obligations to protect peacekeeping personnel.
The attack comes amid renewed exchanges of fire between Israeli forces and the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah along the southern Lebanese border, an area where UN peacekeepers have long been deployed to monitor hostilities and help maintain stability. The United Nations has also condemned the incident and called for accountability, stressing that peacekeepers carrying out international mandates must not be targeted.
