Several parts of Accra were left flooded on Sunday morning following hours of heavy rainfall that disrupted movement and forced commuters to wade through waterlogged streets.
The downpour, which began in the early hours of March 29, overwhelmed drainage systems in a number of communities, leading to significant flooding in areas such as Dansoman, Weija, Mallam Junction, Kaneshie, Accra Central, Kwame Nkrumah Circle and Kasoa Old Barrier.
Roads in the affected areas were submerged, slowing traffic and in some cases bringing movement to a near standstill as drivers struggled to navigate through the floodwaters. Pedestrians were also seen wading through knee-deep water to reach their destinations.
Residents say the situation developed rapidly after the intensity of the rainfall increased, with floodwaters entering homes and shops in some low-lying areas. The flooding has once again raised concerns about poor drainage and the perennial impact of heavy rains in the capital.
Emergency response teams are yet to report any casualties, but authorities are expected to assess the extent of damage caused to property and infrastructure.
The development follows earlier weather warnings of possible heavy rains and flash floods, particularly in coastal and low-lying communities.
Residents have been advised to avoid flooded roads, remain indoors where possible, and take precautionary measures as more rains are expected in the coming days.
