The United States will head into this summer’s World Cup without one of its most promising forwards, after Derby County’s Patrick Agyemang suffered a serious Achilles tendon injury that ends his hopes of playing on home soil.
The 25-year-old collapsed in visible pain during Derby’s Championship victory over Stoke City on Monday, clutching his left ankle after landing awkwardly. He was stretchered off at Pride Park and taken for scans, which confirmed the worst: his recovery will rule him out of the tournament co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
Derby County released a statement saying it “would be wrong to put a timeline” on his rehabilitation but pledged full support. “Everyone at Derby County is fully behind Patrick at this difficult time and will continue to support him every step of the way,” the club said.
The injury comes at a cruel moment for Agyemang, who had just featured in back-to-back internationals for Mauricio Pochettino’s side, scoring against Belgium before playing a full half against Portugal. His rapid rise, from the University of Rhode Island draft pick in 2023 to a national team regular within two years, had made him one of the faces of the US squad heading into the World Cup.
Agyemang’s move from Charlotte FC to Derby last summer was a landmark transfer, earning the MLS club a record fee understood to be worth up to £7.3 million. Since arriving in England, he has become central to Derby’s promotion push, scoring 10 goals and providing four assists in 37 appearances.
His international career has been equally swift. He scored on debut in January 2025 and added five more goals in 13 caps, including a brace in the Gold Cup that helped the US reach the final.
Now, instead of preparing for the biggest stage of his career, Agyemang faces months of recovery. For the US team, his absence is a significant blow to their attacking options, while for Derby, it removes a key figure in their bid to return to the Premier League.
The setback underscores both the fragility and unpredictability of elite sport. For Agyemang, whose rise has been meteoric, the challenge ahead is not about proving himself on the world stage, but about returning to it.
