The National Identification Authority (NIA) is preparing to launch a nationwide registration campaign in May 2026 aimed at enrolling about 3.1 million children aged between 6 and 14.
The exercise is part of the Authority’s wider goal of ensuring that all Ghanaians are included in the national identification database.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Friday, April 10, Director of Corporate Affairs, Williams Ampomah Darlas, said the registration has been organised into three age groups—0 to 5, 6 to 14, and 15 and above—to make the process more convenient for the public.
He indicated that the NIA has already issued around 18.7 million Ghana Cards to individuals aged 15 and above, and is now turning its attention to children within the 6 to 14 age group.
He also recalled that a similar exercise conducted in 2024 across 164 districts encountered challenges, including difficulty reaching some communities and network issues, although the cards were eventually delivered.
Drawing on those experiences, the Authority plans to introduce instant card printing and issuance during the upcoming exercise to enhance efficiency and access.
He explained that children must be accompanied by their parents, after which their details will be linked to those of their parents and their cards issued immediately.
The registration will kick off at the same time in the Volta and Oti Regions before expanding to the five northern regions.
It will later move to the southern part of the country, covering regions such as Bono, Bono East, Ahafo, and Ashanti.
