Bono East Minister challenges emerging journalists to prioritise ethics and public service
New entrants into Ghana’s media industry have been urged to place integrity, accuracy and public service at the centre of their work as concerns grow over misinformation and declining public confidence in sections of the media.
The call came from Bono East Regional Minister Francis Owusu Antwi during the second graduation ceremony of A ONE Media College in Techiman, where he addressed graduates preparing to enter the journalism and media landscape.
Speaking on the role of the media in national development, Mr Antwi stressed that journalists must balance their responsibility of scrutinising those in authority with the need to report accurately and responsibly. He said public trust in the media depends largely on the professionalism and credibility of practitioners.
The Regional Minister encouraged the graduates to view journalism as a public service profession, noting that ethical reporting remains critical to promoting accountability, transparency and informed public discourse.
He urged the newly trained media professionals to apply the skills acquired during their studies in ways that serve society and contribute positively to national development.
The ceremony, held under the theme of empowering the next generation of media professionals through excellence, integrity and innovation, brought together media practitioners, traditional leaders and educators.
Adding his voice, Head of Studies at A ONE Media College, Rev. Francis Kwabena Sei, reminded graduates that success in the profession requires discipline, humility and a commitment to accepted standards of practice.
Bono East Regional Chairman of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Rev. Fred Antwi, also encouraged the graduates to familiarise themselves with the association’s code of ethics, describing it as an important guide for responsible journalism.
According to him, adherence to professional standards helps strengthen the relationship between the media and the public while protecting the credibility of the profession.
Presiding over the event, Nana Akora Tuah Kyeremeh Siasaa V, Twafohene of the Wenchi Traditional Area, urged the graduates to uphold the dignity of journalism and conduct themselves in ways that bring honour to the profession.
The graduation marked another milestone for the institution as it continues to train media practitioners for the evolving demands of Ghana’s communication industry.
