Kampakuya Naa Yakubu Abukari has been formally unveiled as the Regent of Dagbon following the passing of the Overlord, Ya-Na Abukari Mahama II, on July 11, 2026.
The regency ceremony was held in Yendi, the traditional capital of the Dagbon Kingdom, where thousands of chiefs, mourners, dignitaries and supporters gathered to witness the significant occasion.
As Regent, Kampakuya Naa Yakubu Abukari will oversee the affairs of the kingdom until the late Ya-Na’s final funeral rites are completed and a new Overlord is chosen in line with Dagbon customs and traditions.
The event featured vibrant cultural displays, traditional drumming and ceremonial musket firing, reflecting the rich heritage of the Dagbon Kingdom.
Prior to the public ceremony, customary installation rites were conducted in private by traditional leaders as required by tradition.
Security was tightened throughout Yendi, with more than 600 security personnel deployed to maintain law and order and ensure the safety of residents and visitors during the event.
Special Islamic prayers were also offered in honour of the late Ya-Na Abukari Mahama II as part of the regency proceedings.
The installation of the Regent represents an important step in Dagbon’s succession process, clearing the way for the late Ya-Na’s final funeral rites and the eventual selection and enskinment of a new Overlord.
