The National Peace Council (NPC), has strongly condemned the tragic shooting incident at Nyankpala in the Northern Region, which occurred during today’s elections.
Together with the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP) and other partners in the Election Situation Room, the Council declared its concerns over the numerous reports of violent incidents at some polling centers across the country.
The Council expressed that although the incident has claimed one life and injured another, credit must be given to the Ghana Police Service for confirming arrests of the four individuals said to have perpetrated the incident earlier this afternoon.
In a statement, the NPC expressed deep sympathy for the families of the victims and the affected community and strongly denounced any form of electoral violence.
“We condemn in the strongest possible terms the killing and injury of any person during the elections. This violence is unacceptable, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of those affected, as well as to the local community in Nyankpala and other regions impacted by similar acts of violence,” the statement said.
The NPC reiterated its firm stance against the use of firearms in the electoral process, calling on all stakeholders in the election to uphold peace and stability throughout the voting period, even as the polls close and collation begins.
The Council also reminded political parties of the 4th Presidential Elections Peace Pact their leaders signed on November 28, 2024, pledging to promote a peaceful and stable environment before, during, and after the elections.
“We plead with all political parties to honor the pledges made by their presidential candidates to ensure peace in our nation”, part of the statement read.
