Hon. Cynthia Mamle Morrison
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Agona West Constituency has expelled 280 members, including incumbent Member of Parliament Cynthia Mamle Morrison, for breaching party allegiance.
Morrison, who decided to run as an independent candidate in the upcoming 2024 parliamentary elections, was dismissed alongside 279 party members who supported her bid. The decision was announced following an Expanded Constituency Executive Committee meeting on December 15, 2024, and formally communicated in a letter signed by the constituency chairman, Alhaji Gibrine Tanko.
The letter, addressed to the NPP’s General Secretary, emphasized that the expelled members are no longer recognized as part of the party. They are barred from holding party positions, participating in party activities, or using the NPP’s symbols and flag.
This move aligns with Article 3(9)(1) of the NPP’s 2017 Constitution (as amended), which allows for disciplinary action against members who fail to uphold the party’s principles and loyalty.
Morrison’s decision to run independently, despite being the sitting MP, has caused controversy within the party. The NPP argues that such actions threaten the party’s unity and integrity.
