The Electoral Commission (EC) has gazetted parliamentary election results for 274 constituencies and submitted them to the Clerk of Parliament. However, results for Ablekuma North and Dome Kwabenya remain outstanding due to incomplete pink sheets from some polling stations.
At a press conference in Accra on Tuesday, Dr. Bossman Asare, Deputy Chair of the EC in charge of Corporate Services, assured the public that discussions are underway with stakeholders to finalize the re-collation process for these constituencies. He emphasized that the results would be concluded before the swearing-in of the 9th Parliament on January 7, 2025.
In Ablekuma North, results from 37 polling stations are yet to be received. For Dome Kwabenya, hard copies of pink sheets required to verify results from three polling stations were not provided by political parties, causing the suspension of the re-collation process. Dr. Asare rejected criticisms that the exercise was illegal, explaining that initial declarations in these constituencies were made under duress and did not follow due process. He stressed that the EC would not validate an illegal process.
The EC recently resolved issues in seven constituencies, including Obuasi East and Tema Central. Dr. Asare cited precedents from the 2004 elections, where re-collation addressed similar irregularities.
The December 7 elections saw former President John Dramani Mahama elected alongside 276 Members of Parliament. Both the President-elect and MPs will be sworn in on January 7, 2025. The EC’s efforts reflect its commitment to electoral integrity.
