12 killed, women and children abducted in Nigeria village attack
Armed attackers have killed at least 12 people and abducted women and children during a night raid on a village in Nigeria’s northwestern Sokoto State, residents said.
The gunmen reportedly stormed Lajinge village at about 11 p.m. on Saturday and continued their assault until around 3 a.m. on Sunday.
One resident told Reuters that six members of the same family were burned to death after the attackers set their home on fire.
The assailants also reportedly injured four people, kidnapped several women and children, and stole a large number of livestock, according to resident Auwal Hassan.
The area has been plagued by attacks from heavily armed criminal groups, commonly known as bandits, who frequently raid communities, abduct residents for ransom and steal livestock.
Sokoto police spokesperson Ahmed Rufai said authorities were investigating the incident and would provide further information.
The latest attack comes just a week after suspected bandits killed at least 24 farmers in neighbouring Zamfara State.
