52-year-old South African arrested with suspected heroin after arriving from Accra

A 52-year-old South African man has been arrested at OR Tambo International Airport after police allegedly discovered suspected heroin valued at more than R2 million in his luggage.

The arrest took place on Sunday, September 20, during an intelligence-led operation by the South African Police Service (SAPS), with assistance from the Border Management Authority (BMA).

According to SAPS, the suspect had arrived on a flight from Accra, Ghana, when he was intercepted by security personnel at the airport.

A search of his luggage reportedly revealed bullet-shaped packages and blocks containing substances believed to be heroin. The suspected narcotics have an estimated street value exceeding R2 million.

The arrest brings to three the number of suspected drug mules apprehended at OR Tambo International Airport within the past three weeks, as authorities step up efforts to combat drug trafficking.

Suspect expected in court over drug trafficking allegations

The suspect is expected to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrates’ Court later this week to face charges related to drug trafficking.

SAPS said investigations are ongoing to establish the origin of the suspected narcotics and determine whether the man has links to a wider drug trafficking network.

The police have reaffirmed their commitment to conducting intelligence-driven and targeted operations to dismantle drug trafficking syndicates.

The arrest comes amid growing concerns over reported drug shipments originating from Ghana. The developments have prompted the Presidency to establish a task force to investigate the cases following the arrest of several suspects, including four Customs officers.
