Kenyasi prison officers, inmates accused of machete attack on man

Two prison officers and three inmates at the Kenyasi Settlement Camp Prison in the Ahafo Region have allegedly assaulted a man with machetes, leaving him with multiple injuries.

The victim, Opoku Afriyie, a resident of Kenyasi No. 2 who works as a sound system operator and commercial motorbike rider, is currently receiving treatment at the Asutifi North District Hospital.

Mr Afriyie said the incident occurred on Thursday while he was transporting a passenger on his motorcycle.

He alleged that a prison officer and three inmates intercepted him and attacked him with machetes after accusing him of stealing yams from the officer’s farm.

According to him, the assault left him with injuries to his arms, legs, abdomen, neck and other parts of his body.

Mr Afriyie further claimed that another prison officer later arrived at the scene, handcuffed him and took him to the Kenyasi Settlement Camp Prison. He alleged that while at the facility, another officer repeatedly slapped him before he was eventually handed over to the Kenyasi Police.

Police officers who observed the severity of his injuries reportedly arranged for him to be taken to the Asutifi North District Hospital, where he remains on admission.

Mr Afriyie said he continues to suffer severe pain and expressed concern that the individuals he accused of assaulting him had not yet been arrested.

He has called on the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and ensure that appropriate action is taken.

The Asutifi District Police Command, led by Superintendent Harold Yamoah Ponkor, has commenced investigations into the matter.

Mr Afriyie has also appealed for financial support to help cover his medical expenses.
