The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has pledged that those responsible for the death of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun will face the necessary consequences.
This commitment comes in the wake of a heartbreaking incident that occurred on Saturday, April 6, at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra, where Oluwasegun collapsed during a match and was later declared dead at the hospital.
In light of this tragedy, the Ministry of Youth and Sports has joined forces with the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) to form a seven-member committee tasked with investigating the events leading up to the boxer’s untimely death.

This committee comprises medical professionals, legal experts, and representatives from various boxing regulatory organizations in Ghana.
In a recent media engagement, Kofi Adams highlighted the seriousness of the situation and the government’s commitment to a thorough investigation.
“The objective is stated in the terms of reference. If there is anything that should have been done that was not done and if it can be done, we will make sure that it is done in future so we will avoid such situations. And of course, if anybody did something wrong that they know should have done, if the rules suggest that this is the punishment for this wrong, that punishment will be given,” he stated.
The incident has raised numerous concerns in both Ghana and Nigeria, with many people questioning the adequacy of medical preparedness and safety measures in place for boxing events in the country.

GBA President Abraham Neequaye has also expressed his commitment to cooperating fully with the investigative committee, assuring that the boxing authority is dedicated to upholding safety standards and ensuring the welfare of athletes.
The committee is tasked with delivering its findings in two weeks.
