Twenty-five final-year students of Agona Swedru Senior High School have been suspended indefinitely following their alleged involvement in a violent altercation triggered by a reported same-sex relationship proposal.
According to school authorities, the incident began when a male student allegedly proposed a romantic relationship to another male student, who rejected the advance.
The student who declined the proposal reportedly informed some peers, who then advised him to pretend to accept the offer in order to stage a setup, 3news.com reports.
On the agreed meeting day, a group of students believed to be aligned with the student who was approached ambushed and assaulted the one who made the proposal. In response, the assaulted student reportedly rallied his dormitory mates, resulting in a retaliatory attack. The situation escalated quickly into a full-blown fight involving dozens of students.
The Headmistress of the school, Golda Esi Andam, confirmed to Onua News that the students were given a fair hearing before disciplinary action was taken. She stated that although the students have been indefinitely suspended, they will still be allowed to sit for their final WASSCE exams under the escort of their parents.
“These students will write their final exams under the escort of their parents, they have now realised that the Ghana Education Service does not joke with its code of conduct,” she said.
