The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has expressed deep sorrow and solidarity with the government and people of Ghana following the tragic helicopter crash on August 6, 2025, that claimed the lives of two senior government ministers and six others.
In a statement issued by the Office of the Resident Representative of ECOWAS in Ghana on Thursday, August 7, the Commission extended heartfelt sympathies to President John Dramani Mahama and the entire nation of Ghana over what it described as a “national tragedy.”
“It is with a deep sense of sorrow that I convey on behalf of the President, Management, Staff of the ECOWAS Commission and my Office our heartfelt condolence to H.E. President John Dramani Mahama, the Government and People of Ghana over the national tragedy,” ECOWAS Resident Representative to Ghana, Mohammed Lawan Gana, said in a release.
Among the victims of the crash were Ghana’s Minister of Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, and the Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed. The two were reportedly on official assignment en route to Obuasi in the Ashanti Region when their helicopter went down, killing all on board.
“This is a profound loss not only to Ghana but to our region, West Africa,” the statement read. “Their commitment to service and contributions to national and regional progress and development will indelibly be etched in the annals of the history of Ghana, our region, and the African continent.”
The message, signed on behalf of the President, Management, Staff of the ECOWAS Commission and the Office of the President of the Commission, emphasized the organization’s support for the people of Ghana during this period of mourning.
“In this moment of grief, we stand in solidarity with H.E. President Mahama and offer our thoughts and prayers to our Ghanaian brothers and sisters affected by this heart-breaking tragedy,” the Commission added.
The regional body concluded its statement with prayers for the souls of the departed and comfort for their families: “May Almighty God, in His infinite mercies, grant the departed eternal rest and their families the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss. Amin.”
