Government plans to expand the textile and garment sector to a value of over US$2 billion by 2033.
The Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry says the plan is expected to bring in US$1.2 billion in new investments, create about 150,000 direct and indirect jobs, and restore cotton farming on 50,000 hectares of land.
At a stakeholder validation workshop in Accra, Deputy Minister Samson Ahi said the draft Textiles and Garment Manufacturing Policy will guide the industry’s growth. He added that the objectives are achievable with collective effort.
Minister of Labour, Jobs and Employment, Dr. Abdul-Rashid Pelpuo, also encouraged stakeholders to promote inclusive job creation, especially for women and youth. He advised that recruitment should be based on competence rather than political considerations.
The policy, once finalized, will serve as a framework for the sector’s development.
