The Minister of Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has stated that the Attorney General has been directed to begin processes to terminate the existing Pwalugu Multipurpose Dam contract and re-award it for construction.
According to him, the decision is part of government’s renewed commitment to addressing the annual devastation caused by the spillage of the Bagre Dam in Burkina Faso, which leaves communities in the Upper East and North East Regions flooded, destroying farmlands, homes, and livestock.
Speaking to journalists in Accra on Friday, August 29, Eric Opoku stressed that the John Mahama-led government is determined to complete the Pwalugu Dam, describing it as a critical intervention to protect farmers’ livelihoods and secure the nation’s food supply.
“What we are doing is that we have asked the Attorney General to initiate processes for the termination of the contract and re-award it. The President is committed to ensuring that the Pwalugu Dam is constructed,” he said.
“When that is done, it will cushion our people against the effects of the spillage. In the meantime, we are cautioning communities and educating them on how to manage the impact as we prepare for the project’s restart.”
