Angry supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) attempted to physically assault National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah when he arrived at the Wenchi Durbar grounds for the funeral of the late Akwatia MP, Ernest Kumi.
The NDC chairman’s security detail and party members resisted the attack until police officers moved in to restore order.
Calm was later restored after New Juaben South MP Michael Kofi Okyere Baafi, NPP National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye, and former Eastern Regional Chairman Kingston Akomeng Kissi intervened to control the situation, citinewsroom reports.
This allowed Asiedu Nketiah and his entourage to proceed to where former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia were seated to pay their respects.
NDC Deputy General Secretary Mustapha Gbande condemned the incident, describing it as “unfortunate” and warning that it would influence how the NDC relates with the NPP ahead of the 2028 elections.
“This is worrying because in the midst of calls to eschew violence, look at what they have done at a funeral. We have taken a cue from it, and it will redefine our relationship going into the election,” he told Channel One News.
