President John Dramani Mahama has recommended permanent employment for National Service Scheme (NSS) personnel who played a key role in recovery efforts following the recent fire outbreak at the Akosombo power enclave.
The request was made during his visit to the facility on April 30, 2026, where he assessed the damage caused by the fire and ongoing restoration works at the Volta River Authority (VRA).
According to reports, the female NSS personnel was part of the technical response team that supported emergency operations and contributed to stabilising the system after the incident. In recognition of her efforts, Mr Mahama urged the management of the VRA to consider offering her permanent employment.
The fire, which affected parts of the Akosombo facility, disrupted electricity supply in several areas and triggered a rapid response from engineers and technicians across key energy institutions. Power has since been fully restored, with officials confirming that all generating units are back in operation following coordinated recovery efforts.
During the visit, Mr Mahama commended staff of the VRA and other agencies for their swift response, describing the incident as unfortunate but also an opportunity to strengthen and modernise ageing infrastructure at the facility.
The recommendation for permanent employment has been widely viewed as recognition of the role young professionals play in national emergency response, particularly within Ghana’s energy sector.
The Akosombo incident has also renewed calls for stronger investment in infrastructure resilience to protect the country’s power systems from future disruptions.
