The Trades Union Congress Ghana has urged government to prioritise job creation over economic statistics, while also calling for better wages and stronger worker protection as Ghana marked International Workers’ Day on Thursday, May 1, 2026.
Speaking at the national May Day celebration held at Jackson Park in Koforidua, TUC Chairman Bernard Owusu said economic growth figures must translate into real employment opportunities for Ghanaians.
He noted that many workers continue to struggle despite reports of economic recovery, stressing that “job creation must be the priority if livelihoods are to improve.”
Also addressing the gathering, TUC Secretary-General Joshua Ansah called for improved wages and stronger enforcement of labour laws to protect workers, particularly those in the informal sector.
He highlighted concerns over rising living costs and stagnant incomes, urging government to implement policies that ensure fair pay, job security, and dignity at the workplace.
The 2026 May Day event in Koforidua brought together hundreds of workers, union leaders, and government officials, with speakers emphasizing the need for practical interventions to address unemployment and working conditions.
Labour Day is observed annually to recognise the contribution of workers and to advocate for improved labour conditions across the country.
