The Member of Parliament for Guan Constituency, Fred Agbenyo, has strongly condemned former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for attributing the death of the late Akwatia MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi, to a court case involving the lawmaker.
Mr. Agbenyo described Dr. Bawumia’s comments as unfortunate and inappropriate, warning that such remarks have the potential to incite the bereaved family and the people of Akwatia against the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
“Regardless of your relationship or friendship with anybody, when a person is aggrieved with an election outcome, the law allows them to go to court.
“That is part of our democracy. For a former Vice President to mount a political platform and attribute the death of an MP to a court case is most unfortunate,” Mr. Agbenyo said.
Speaking on TV3’s New Day show on Monday, September 1, 2025, he argued that Dr. Bawumia himself rose to political prominence through Ghana’s court processes during the 2012–2013 election petition, and therefore should be the last person to undermine the right of others to seek redress in court.
“What really brought him to the public eye was the election petition, where he spent months in the witness box. That is how he became popular in his party and in Ghanaian politics.
“Today, he wants us to believe that going to court caused someone’s death. That is not right, and he should go back and listen to himself,” the Guan MP added.
Mr. Agbenyo urged political leaders to exercise restraint and be measured in their public comments, especially during the tense atmosphere ahead of the Akwatia by-election, stressing that the focus should be on peace and development for the constituency.
The Akwatia by-election will be held on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, following the death of previous MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi.
