President John Mahama has thrown his weight behind the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Akwatia, Bernard Bediako, ahead of the upcoming by-election.
Delivering the message on Mr. Mahama’s behalf, the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, told party supporters in Akwatia on Sunday, August 31, 2025, that the NDC flagbearer looks forward to working with Lawyer Bediako in his government.
“The president has sent me to tell you that he needs Lawyer Bediako to work within his government,” Mr. Debrah said, urging the people of Akwatia to rally behind the candidate.
The message formed part of the NDC’s campaign activities leading to the by-election, scheduled for Tuesday, September 2, 2025, following the death of the constituency’s MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
He further appealed to voters to translate their support into ballots, stressing that an NDC victory would strengthen collaboration between government and the people of Akwatia, paving the way for more development projects in the constituency.
The by-election follows the passing of the constituency’s Member of Parliament, Ernest Yaw Kumi.
The Akwatia by-election has heightened political tension, with both the NDC and NPP pulling out all the stops to secure the seat, which is seen as a critical battleground ahead of the 2028 general elections.
