President John Dramani Mahama has officially commissioned Phases 1 and 2 of the Tema Port Expansion Project, marking a major milestone in Ghana’s efforts to strengthen its position as a leading trade and logistics hub in West Africa.
The $1.5 billion development, undertaken through a public-private partnership involving Meridian Port Services (MPS), the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), APM Terminals and Africa Global Logistics (AGL), is regarded as one of the largest port infrastructure upgrades in the sub-region.
Speaking at the ceremony on Thursday, November 13, President Mahama said the expansion delivers significant improvements in cargo handling, vessel turnaround time and operational efficiency, creating capacity that will attract global shipping lines and stimulate economic growth.
He noted that the project brings Ghana closer to its long-term goal of becoming the preferred maritime gateway, offering businesses faster and more cost-effective trade routes and giving the country a stronger foothold in the competitive shipping market.
President Mahama first initiated the expansion in 2016 when he launched the original $1.5 billion plan. The commissioning completes that vision through the MPS–GPHA–APM Terminals–AGL partnership, which has delivered modern logistics infrastructure designed to meet international standards.
The upgraded port is expected to boost investor confidence, support job creation and reinforce Ghana’s growing influence within regional and global trade networks.
