The Government has disclosed that authorities in Latvia have appointed new investigators and placed the probe into the death of Ghanaian student Nana Agyei Ahyia under the direct oversight of the country’s Interior Ministry.
This development comes after a Ghanaian delegation, led by Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, travelled to Latvia to obtain further details about the circumstances surrounding the student’s passing.
Nana Agyei Ahyia, an 18-year-old Ghanaian studying in Latvia, died in June 2025. Latvian officials initially reported that he fell from a hostel building. However, his family has challenged that explanation and called for a more thorough inquiry, expressing concerns about the events leading to his death.
In a statement released on Thursday, February 19, 2026, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs detailed the outcomes of the diplomatic mission.
The delegation comprised forensic specialists, a pathologist, legal representatives, Ghana’s Ambassador, and consular officials from the Ghana Embassy in Berlin. The student’s mother and aunt were also present at meetings with Latvian authorities in their capacity as family representatives.
During the visit, the Ghanaian team engaged with Latvia’s Foreign Minister, Interior Minister, senior police officials, state prosecutors, and investigators assigned to the case. Latvian authorities indicated that the investigation is still active and ongoing.
According to the statement, the Interior Ministry has now assumed direct supervision of the case and reassigned it to new investigators. Nana Agyei’s mother also submitted an official statement to be added to the case record, with the Ministry noting that additional information would be provided if necessary.
The Government of Ghana has further requested access to the final investigative report for the family, a request Latvian officials reportedly did not oppose.
The Ministry affirmed that it will maintain engagement with Latvian authorities and continue updating the family, while urging the public to avoid speculation as investigations continue.
