Traditional leaders in the Bogoso–Prestea mining enclave have rejected suggestions that communities are split over the operations of Heath Goldfields Limited (HGL), insisting that residents remain united in demanding accountability from the new operator.
Divisional Chiefs across the catchment area have aligned with the Catchment Area Community Alliance (CACA), calling for a comprehensive review of HGL’s contract. Their collective stance challenges claims that a section of residents support the company, a narrative critics argue has been deliberately amplified to misrepresent community sentiment.
“The so-called divided residents’ narrative is false. Our communities stand united in demanding accountability and transparency in how HGL took over operations at Bogoso–Prestea,” one chief stated, underscoring the consensus among traditional authorities.
Community leaders allege that HGL has spotlighted a handful of supportive individuals to create the impression of widespread backing. Sources point to this as a calculated attempt to deflect attention from mounting concerns about the company’s capacity to manage the mine.
The controversy stems from the transfer of the Bogoso–Prestea lease to HGL after Future Global Resources was stripped of its contract in September 2024 for failing to meet regulatory obligations within a 120-day deadline. Since then, chiefs and residents have questioned HGL’s technical expertise, financial stability, and its handling of operational challenges, particularly the flooded underground pits.
Adding to the skepticism, traditional leaders have disputed HGL’s claims of acquiring new mining equipment. Residents argue the machinery belongs to Fridoug Construction Limited, describing the company’s assertions as misleading.
“The transition process has left serious gaps in oversight, and we are calling on the government to intervene and ensure the mine is managed by an operator capable of meeting both technical and financial standards,” another chief emphasized.
The chiefs’ unified position signals growing pressure on regulators to scrutinize HGL’s takeover and ensure the mine’s future is secured under credible management.
