Australian authorities have opened an investigation into a 2010 incident involving “Orange Is the New Black” actress Ruby Rose, who earlier this week accused singer Katy Perry of sexual assault on social media.
Rose claims the alleged incident took place at a nightclub in Melbourne in 2010—an allegation Perry has strongly denied.
Victoria Police confirmed that officers from the Melbourne Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team (SOCIT) are looking into the claim, said to have occurred in the city’s central business district. They declined further comment, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation.
Perry, through her representative, rejected the accusation prior to the investigation, describing it as “completely false” and “reckless.” No further response has been issued since the probe was announced. Meanwhile, Rose’s representative has not responded to multiple requests for comment.
Rose first made the claim earlier in the week in response to a social media post by Complex magazine about Perry. The article focused on Perry’s viral reaction to Justin Bieber’s Coachella performance, which she attended alongside former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who has been romantically linked to her.
In a now-deleted post, Rose alleged that Perry assaulted her at the Spice Market nightclub in Melbourne. Initially, she said she had no intention of reporting the matter to police, but later revealed she had filed a report and would no longer comment publicly. She noted that the police request for silence was standard and expressed relief at being able to begin the healing process.
Perry released her seventh studio album, “143,” in 2024 and concluded a world tour in December. In April 2025, she also joined a group of six women, including Gayle King and Lauren Sanchez Bezos, on a brief Blue Origin spaceflight to the edge of space.
