A boys’ dormitory at Anlo Afiadenyigba Senior High School in the Volta Region caught fire on Tuesday afternoon, May 19, 2026, but a fast-moving response from the Ghana National Fire Service kept the situation from spiralling into something far more catastrophic.

The distress call came in at around 1:25 p.m., and personnel from the Anloga Fire Station did not waste time. A team led by Station Officer One Lumor Tobias was deployed immediately, arriving in time to battle the blaze and bring it under full control before it could jump to surrounding structures on the school compound.

No students or staff were harmed.
While the outcome was fortunate, the incident itself serves as yet another reminder of the vulnerability of school infrastructure, particularly dormitories, where students sleep and store their belongings, to fire outbreaks.

The GNFS has used the incident as an opportunity to send a wider message, calling on students, teachers, and school administrators across the country to take fire safety protocols seriously and not wait for an emergency to find out whether their institutions are prepared for one.
