Asante Kotoko have stepped up efforts to secure a new permanent head coach following a difficult campaign, with UK-born Ghanaian trainer Chris Baffour-Akoto emerging as a leading candidate for the vacant position.
Sources close to the club indicate that discussions between both parties have been positive, although the Kumasi-based side is yet to make a final decision on the appointment.
The search for a new manager comes after a turbulent season for the Porcupine Warriors, who finished eighth in the Ghana Premier League and later described the campaign as disappointing.
The club experienced multiple coaching changes during the season, with Karim Zito and assistant coach Prince Yaw Owusu eventually leaving their roles after a poor run of results. Interim coach Hamza Obeng was later placed in temporary charge as management began assessing long-term options for the dugout.
Baffour-Akoto is believed to have attracted interest from Kotoko following his recent work in both Ghanaian and European football.
The UEFA Licence A holder recently departed Luxembourg side Titus Petange due to work permit issues, making him available for a possible move.
He also gained attention during the 2024/25 Division One League season after guiding Rospak FC to a second-place finish. Under his leadership, the club collected 59 points, recorded more than 18 wins and scored 50 goals during the campaign.
Before that, Baffour-Akoto had coaching spells with Crawley Under-21 and Fort William, while also serving as a video assistant coach with Ghana’s national U-20 setup.
People familiar with the club’s considerations believe his tactical approach and preference for developing young players align with the current structure of Kotoko’s squad.
His reputation within football circles is also viewed as a factor that could help stabilise the dressing room and potentially attract new signings as the club looks to rebuild ahead of the new season.
Despite the growing links, Kotoko are expected to continue consultations before confirming any permanent appointment.
