New Edubiase SHS to get 1,500-seater assembly hall under AngloGold Ashanti support
Students and staff of New Edubiase Senior High School are set to benefit from a major infrastructure upgrade following the start of construction on a new multi-purpose assembly hall and administrative facility funded by AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine.
The project, which forms part of the mining company’s 10-Year Socio-Economic Development Plan (SEDP), will deliver a modern 1,500-capacity hall together with a new secured gatehouse and several office and welfare facilities for the school.
Construction work has officially commenced, with local firm AA Engineering and Construction expected to complete the project within 17 months.
Unlike a traditional assembly hall, the new structure is being designed as a multi-functional educational facility capable of supporting academic activities, staff administration, conferences and large school events.
Plans for the facility include office spaces for administrators and teachers, conference and meeting rooms, a staff common room, a staff cafeteria, washrooms, storage areas and a dedicated sound room for public events and audio-visual coordination.
At the sod-cutting ceremony, AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine said the investment reflects its broader commitment to improving educational infrastructure in communities connected to its operations.
Director of Sustainability Management at the mine, Edmund Oduro Agyei, said the company sees education as a critical area for long-term community development and social transformation.
Traditional authorities in New Edubiase welcomed the project, describing it as evidence that development initiatives linked to the mine are extending beyond Obuasi into surrounding communities.
Edubiasehene, Guahyia Oduropanin Birikorang, praised the mining company for prioritising educational development and investing in facilities that would benefit future generations.
Management of the school also described the project as a major breakthrough for the institution.
Headmaster Christopher Appiah Mensah said inadequate infrastructure had remained one of the school’s long-standing challenges, especially during major school gatherings and academic activities.
According to him, the new facility will improve administration, create a better learning environment and provide sufficient space for programmes, examinations and student activities.
When completed, the project is expected to strengthen educational infrastructure in the Adansi South District while improving conditions for both teaching and learning at New Edubiase Senior High School.
