From National League grounds to Europe’s biggest stage: David Raya prepares for Champions League final
Long before he became Arsenal’s first-choice goalkeeper and a European champion contender, David Raya was playing in front of small crowds in England’s fifth tier, fighting relegation battles with Southport.
Now, more than a decade later, the Spanish international is preparing for the biggest match of his club career as Arsenal face Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League final.
Raya’s rise to the top of European football has become one of the game’s most remarkable journeys, taking him from non-league football to the grandest stage in club competition.
Back in September 2014, the then-teenage goalkeeper lined up for Southport in a National League clash against Macclesfield Town at Moss Rose. Fewer than 1,500 fans watched Southport lose 3-0, but few could have imagined the young Spaniard would one day become Arsenal’s number one goalkeeper.
At 30 years old, Raya is now set to become only the third player to progress from non-league football to a Champions League final, joining former Liverpool defender Steve Finnan and ex-Manchester United centre-back Chris Smalling.
Raya’s path into English football was far from conventional. Raised in Spain, he spent his youth career with lower-division side Cornella before moving to Blackburn Rovers through a partnership arrangement between the two clubs.
Competition for places at Blackburn limited his opportunities, prompting him to make the unusual decision to drop into non-league football in search of first-team experience.
Former Southport assistant manager Paul Carden recalled the goalkeeper’s confidence and composure even during difficult periods for the club.
“You could see immediately that he had special ability,” Carden said. “He wasn’t arrogant. He just believed in himself.”
According to former teammates and coaches, Raya’s calmness on the ball stood out at a time when goalkeepers in lower-league football were rarely expected to build attacks from the back.
Despite concerns over his height and physicality in England’s demanding lower divisions, Raya continued to impress with his shot-stopping ability and decision-making under pressure.
One of his standout moments came during Southport’s FA Cup tie against Derby County in 2015, where he produced a string of saves before the team eventually lost to a late penalty.
Following his return to Blackburn, Raya gradually established himself as first-choice goalkeeper and helped the club secure promotion back to the Championship.
His performances later earned him a move to Brentford in 2019 before Arsenal secured his signing in a deal worth around £27 million after an initial loan spell.
Since arriving in North London, Raya has developed into one of the Premier League’s most reliable goalkeepers and was also part of Spain’s Euro 2024-winning squad.
Saturday’s Champions League final now offers another milestone in a career built on persistence, risk-taking and steady progression through the football pyramid.
For those who watched him during his non-league days, Raya’s success remains both inspiring and unexpected.
“Everybody who knew him at Southport is proud of what he’s achieved,” Carden said. “It’s a story nobody could have predicted.”
