A major road tragedy in the Volta Region has left 15 people dead and dozens injured after a passenger bus and a container truck collided near Peki-Tsame in the early hours of Tuesday.
The crash, which occurred close to Peki Senior High School, triggered a large-scale emergency response as firefighters, police officers and health personnel rushed to assist victims trapped in the wreckage.
According to information released by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), 40 people were involved in the accident. The passengers comprised men, women and children travelling aboard a commercial bus that was on its way to the Oti Region.

The bus, bearing registration number GR 3215-E, was travelling from Battor towards Kabiti when it collided head-on with a Mercedes-Benz container truck, registered WR 1553-C, which was heading towards Accra from Nkwanta.
The force of the impact left several occupants trapped, prompting firefighters from the Peki Fire Station to undertake rescue operations at the scene.
Emergency responders managed to extricate survivors and transport them to the Peki Government Hospital for treatment. The GNFS said 25 injured persons, including two children, were rescued and taken to the facility for urgent medical care.

Despite rescue efforts, 15 people were pronounced dead. The victims included nine men and six women.
Following the recovery operation, the bodies of the deceased were handed over to the Ghana Police Service and subsequently transferred to the mortuary at the Peki Government Hospital pending identification and further procedures.
Authorities have not yet determined what caused the collision, and investigations have been opened to establish the circumstances leading to the crash.

The incident has once again drawn attention to road safety concerns across the country, particularly on highways where serious accidents continue to claim lives and leave families devastated.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the Ghana National Fire Service expressed sympathy to relatives of the victims and renewed calls for greater caution among motorists.

The Service urged drivers to observe traffic regulations, avoid dangerous manoeuvres and remain vigilant on the roads as efforts continue nationwide to reduce the number of fatal accidents.
