A major police operation has foiled a planned armed robbery and dismantled a suspected criminal syndicate linked to a series of violent attacks across parts of Ghana.
In a Facebook post, the Police Service said the joint operation, carried out by the Surveillance Unit of the National Operations Department and the Ashanti North Regional Police Command, led to the recovery of weapons and other items believed to be connected to the gang. Efforts are ongoing to arrest other members of the group.
According to police, the intelligence-led exercise forms part of wider efforts to dismantle organised criminal networks responsible for robberies and attacks on motorists and travellers.
Acting on credible intelligence on June 2, 2026, officers moved in on Ali Mohammed, a 23-year-old suspect, at Kukuom in the Ahafo Region.
Investigators identified him as a key member of the syndicate and a wanted suspect in several violent robbery cases.
Police say he is also linked to the fatal shooting of Dominic Frimpong on the Akyiresu–Kwame Dwomo Sreso road on April 12, 2026, as well as two earlier robberies at Bosomkyekye on the Mampong–Ejura road in July 2025 and February 2026. One of the incidents reportedly led to the death of a driver’s mate.

Security officials believe the group was preparing another attack when the operation disrupted their plans, potentially preventing further violence.
During the arrest attempt, Mohammed allegedly fired an AK-47 rifle at officers in an effort to escape. Police returned fire and subdued him, leaving him with gunshot wounds. He was taken to the Goaso Government Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
A follow-up search uncovered a cache of weapons and items believed to have been used in the syndicate’s operations.
Recovered items included an AK-47 rifle, a pump-action gun, two AK-47 magazines, nine rounds of ammunition, three mobile phones, a motorbike ignition key, a black face mask, four talismans, and a sack.
Police say the seizure marks a significant breakthrough in efforts to curb armed robbery and violent crime in the region, as it has deprived the syndicate of key tools used in their operations.
The operation has also yielded valuable intelligence as investigators work to track down remaining suspects.

Authorities have identified Omar Chad, Dauda Tahidu, and Suley among those still being pursued, alongside other unidentified accomplices.
Police have assured the public that efforts to apprehend all remaining members of the gang are ongoing.
