Seventy private Senior High Schools (SHSs) participating in the Free SHS programme under a pilot scheme are calling on the government to settle outstanding arrears owed to them.
The schools say payments intended to cover one hot meal per day for students, along with other recurrent operational costs, have not been released, despite repeated concerns raised with authorities.
According to the schools, they have continued to provide services throughout the 2025/2026 academic year, which is nearing completion.
They warn that the delay in payments is placing pressure on their operations and may affect preparations for the upcoming academic year.
Speaking to Citi News on Friday, June 5, the Public Relations Officer of the Conference of Heads and Proprietors of Private Secondary Schools (CHOPSS) said the schools were expecting government support as the academic year comes to an end.
“The academic year is almost over and we are yet to receive payment. We are hoping government will release the funds as we prepare for the next academic year,” the spokesperson said.
