Acclaimed filmmaker Steven Spielberg says he believes humanity will discover evidence of extraterrestrial life within our lifetime.
The Oscar-winning director shared his view while promoting his new science-fiction film, Disclosure Day, which explores a world confronted with proof that non-human intelligence exists.
Speaking at the film’s UK premiere, Spielberg said his perspective on the possibility of alien life has evolved over the years, becoming more grounded but also more hopeful.
According to him, there are still many unanswered questions about the universe, and he believes future discoveries could reveal things previously hidden from public knowledge.
The new film follows a meteorologist and a cybersecurity expert who uncover evidence of a long-running cover-up involving the existence of non-human intelligence, triggering a race to control the information.
Spielberg said the story is ultimately less about aliens and more about humanity, empathy and the potential for people to unite in the face of a shared reality.
Several members of the cast also expressed belief that life may exist beyond Earth. Actress Emily Blunt said it is difficult to imagine humans are the only civilisation in the universe, while actor Josh O’Connor said he believes “something is out there,” although he is comfortable with the mystery remaining unsolved.
The discussion comes amid growing public interest in unidentified aerial phenomena, government transparency and advances in artificial intelligence, themes that also feature prominently in the film.
Spielberg also weighed in on the use of artificial intelligence in filmmaking, supporting its use as a production tool but opposing any attempt to replace writers, actors or directors.
When asked whether humans would discover life beyond Earth during their lifetime, Spielberg responded confidently: “Yes.”
