The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has introduced a GH¢200 reward for members of the public who provide credible video footage of individuals dumping waste into drains and water bodies during rainfall.
Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey announced the initiative as part of measures aimed at addressing one of the major causes of flooding in the capital.
According to the Assembly, the reward will be paid for each offender identified, meaning individuals who submit evidence involving multiple culprits could receive larger sums. For example, a person who provides valid evidence leading to the identification of five offenders could earn up to GH¢1,000.
The mayor encouraged residents to submit complete and clear evidence rather than incomplete recordings.
“If you have complete evidence, just bring it. People already come with evidence,” he said, noting that the Assembly already has some cases on file and is prepared to take action once convincing material is received.
He explained that successful prosecution of offenders largely depends on the quality of evidence submitted by the public, stressing the need for clear and conclusive footage to support legal action.
The move comes as Accra continues to face recurring floods, with authorities blaming clogged drains filled with plastic waste, garbage, and debris for worsening the impact of heavy rains across the city.
Officials and environmental experts have consistently maintained that while infrastructure improvements are important, changing public attitudes toward indiscriminate dumping into drains and waterways is equally essential in tackling the flooding problem.
