A television interview between U.S. President Donald Trump and NBC’s Kristen Welker ended abruptly after a tense confrontation over the president’s repeated claims that recent elections had been manipulated.
The interview, recorded in Wisconsin during an event with farmers and later aired on NBC’s Meet the Press, became increasingly contentious as Welker pressed Trump to substantiate allegations that both California’s ongoing primary elections and the 2020 U.S. presidential election were rigged.
Trump insisted irregularities were occurring in California, where vote counting was still underway in several key races. However, when asked to provide proof, he pointed to his own observations rather than presenting evidence.
“I look at what’s happening and I listen,” Trump responded.
Welker challenged the assertion, noting that personal observations do not constitute evidence. The exchange quickly escalated, with Trump turning his criticism toward the media and accusing journalists of dishonesty and bias.
As the discussion grew more confrontational, the president described the press as “crooked” and directed personal remarks at the NBC presenter. Welker rejected the accusations and attempted to steer the conversation back to the issues under discussion.
The interview came to an abrupt end moments later when Trump declared he had had enough and signalled that he was leaving.
According to NBC, the session had already faced multiple interruptions due to heavy rain and technical difficulties. The network reported that Trump had spent roughly 50 minutes speaking with Welker before terminating the interview.
Prior to the dispute, the conversation covered a range of topics, including U.S. policy toward Iran. Trump defended his administration’s approach, arguing that military action would be limited and aimed at preventing Tehran from obtaining nuclear weapons.
The discussion later shifted to the January 6 Capitol riot and a previously proposed compensation fund for individuals who claimed they had been unfairly targeted by government investigations. The proposal had attracted criticism from both Democratic and Republican lawmakers before being dropped.
It was during this segment that Trump again raised allegations about election integrity, prompting the questioning that ultimately led to the breakdown of the interview.
Despite the tense ending, Welker later disclosed that she had spoken with the president after the recording. According to her, both acknowledged the difficult conditions under which the interview took place, and Trump agreed to participate in another Meet the Press interview in the future.
The incident adds to Trump’s long-running clashes with major U.S. media organisations, which he has frequently accused of unfair coverage throughout his political career.
