The Member of Parliament for Okaikwei Central, Patrick Boamah, has urged the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, to promptly brief Parliament on challenges facing Ghanaians in South Africa, insisting that lawmakers should not depend on social media for updates on matters of national concern.
He argued that the usual parliamentary processes for summoning ministers can be too slow in dealing with urgent issues, especially those with potential diplomatic implications.
Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, Mr. Boamah said the Foreign Affairs Minister should appear before Parliament to provide detailed and direct information on developments affecting Ghanaian citizens in South Africa.
He warned that delays in addressing the situation could worsen matters and potentially strain relations between Ghana and South Africa.
He further criticised the minister’s use of social media for official communication, urging him to prioritise formal briefings in Parliament instead.
According to him, as elected representatives, MPs must be properly informed in order to respond effectively to concerns raised by their constituents.
Mr. Boamah also emphasised that Ghanaians living abroad are still represented in Parliament through their hometown constituencies, and their MPs have a responsibility to advocate for them.
He noted that a formal briefing would enable legislators to engage affected citizens more effectively and support efforts to resolve any difficulties they may be experiencing.
