Minority leader, Afenyo-Markin
The Minority Caucus in Parliament is calling for the government’s Anti-Flood Taskforce report to be presented before the House for examination and accountability.
The demand comes in the wake of recent flooding incidents that submerged several communities in Accra and renewed concerns over the effectiveness of efforts to address the city’s persistent flooding problems.
According to the Minority, despite the taskforce being established a year ago to tackle the issue, there has been little noticeable improvement in the flood situation across affected areas.
The caucus argued that the taskforce was introduced as a major intervention by the highest levels of government and widely promoted as a solution to the country’s recurring flooding challenges.
They noted that communities continue to experience severe flooding, families are still being displaced, and drainage systems remain overwhelmed whenever heavy rains occur.
The Minority further stressed that taxpayers funded the operations of the taskforce and therefore deserve a transparent account of the work it has undertaken and the results achieved so far.
Meanwhile, former Minister for Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, attributed the continued flooding problems to delays in the release of funds for flood mitigation projects.
On the other hand, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga defended the taskforce, arguing that it should be given more time to fulfil its mandate.
He stated that resolving Accra’s flooding challenges is a long-term process that requires extensive studies, significant funding, and sustained implementation efforts, expressing confidence that the taskforce could eventually achieve positive results.
