President John Dramani Mahama has instructed contractors responsible for the stalled Eastern Regional Hospital project to return to the construction site and restart work.
The announcement was made by Eastern Regional Minister Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey during her keynote address at the launch of the Eastern Regional Hospital’s centenary celebrations in Koforidua on Thursday, June 11.
According to the Minister, the President’s directive underscores the government’s determination to improve healthcare infrastructure and expand access to quality medical services in the region.
She noted that the decision to resume construction reflects a broader commitment to strengthening the country’s healthcare system and ensuring the successful completion of the long-delayed facility.
The centenary celebration, she added, offers an opportunity not only to reflect on the hospital’s achievements over the years but also to reaffirm efforts to build a more resilient and efficient healthcare sector.
Meanwhile, the Medical Superintendent of the Eastern Regional Hospital, Dr. Aiden Suntaa Saanwie, welcomed the development and indicated that management is taking steps to enhance the hospital’s human resource capacity in anticipation of future expansion.
He explained that priority would be given to encouraging healthcare professionals to pursue specialised training so that adequate personnel would be available to operate the facility, particularly if it is upgraded to a teaching hospital upon completion.
