Two midwives at the East Gonja District Hospital in Salaga have been remanded into police custody by the Tamale Circuit Court over their alleged connection to the disappearance of a newborn baby from the facility.
The suspects, 52-year-old Frank Atanga and 32-year-old Mariam Mohammed, appeared before Her Honour Afua Srakuba on charges of conspiracy to steal and abduction. Both denied the allegations.
The court ordered that they remain in police custody for one week and adjourned the case to June 18, 2026, for further proceedings.
The case stems from the reported disappearance of a newborn from the hospital on June 10, 2026. Police in the East Gonja Municipality are continuing investigations into the suspected abduction.
The Savannah Regional Health Directorate of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed the incident, describing it as both unfortunate and troubling. According to the Directorate, hospital management immediately conducted a search within the facility after the baby was reported missing, but the efforts were unsuccessful.
In a statement, Savannah Regional Director of Health Services, Dr. John Ekow Otoo, said the Directorate is collaborating with hospital authorities, security agencies, and the Ghana Police Service to determine the circumstances surrounding the disappearance and ensure the safe recovery of the child.
The Directorate also extended its sympathies to the affected family and pledged ongoing support throughout the investigation.
Additionally, the GHS appealed to the public to provide any information that could help locate the baby, encouraging people to contact the nearest police station, the Regional Health Directorate, or hospital management. It assured the public that all information received would be handled confidentially as efforts to find the newborn continue.
